Welcome
First Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church was organized in the heart of Yamacraw. In this area of Savannah, there were few churches and the black people were neglected. Our records reflect that every effort was made to create this organization within the fullest knowledge, consent and fellowship of the Baptist family for this section of the City of Savannah. Thus it was out of the spirit of service to the neglected and fellowship with other Christian workers that First Mount Bethel Church was born.
In 1896, the late Reverend Abe Holmes who was the pastor of a church on West Boundary Street extended an invitation to a great man of God, by the name of Reverend William A. Daughtry of Buck Horn, Virginia to conduct a revival in the city of Savannah. After being in Savannah for a while, Reverend Daughtry decided this is where the Lord wanted him to work.
On November 10, 1897, the late Reverend William A. Daughtry was inspired to organize First Mount Bethel Baptist Church. To fulfill this goal, Reverend Daughtry obtained his vision with the cooperation and assistance of friends and fellow worshippers. He rented an old vacant house on the corner of Lumber and Congress Streets. This was the birth of First Mount Bethel Baptist Church.
The first person to be converted and baptized was the late Sister Cornelia Thomas. Among the early members joining were the late Brother Primus Frazier, Sister Martha Davis, Sister Mary Harvey, Sister Margaret Paige, Sister Mamie Joiner, Brother Allen and Brother Jones. They held services in that location for six (6) years. They received more members and the first deacons to be ordained were the late Brother Allen Jones, Brother Jake Hammond, Brother Albert Bryan, Brother Abraham Middleton and Brother Oliver Daily.
On Sunday March 6, 2016, Pastor Michael C. Smith, Sr. was officially installed as the ninth (9th) Pastor of First Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. We welcomed Pastor Smith and his family with love.
As we reflect upon the many years of remarkable strides in the life and development of First Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Inc., we rejoice in thanksgiving and deep gratitude for our continued growth in spirit and in discipleship. To God be the Glory!
